Delirium vs. Major Neurocognitive Disorder
Delirium: Typically seen in hospital settings; Comes quickly & marked shift in someone’s awareness; (Memory/ language impairment)
MND: Dementia is the previous term.
Serious issue with cognition, memory & perceptual motor skills
Mild Symptoms: ppl have awareness of decline in functioning
Somatic Symptom Disorder vs. Illness Anxiety Disorder vs. Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder
Somatic Symptom Disorder (previously, Somatization)
Client has present somatic issue due to health related anxiety (ie- shortness of breath due to high levels of anxiety)
IAD: Intense fear someone has an illness even when doctor states they are healthy
FNSD: Person psychological issue is then transferred to a somatic problem (ie- arm goes numb due to psychological stressor)
Factitious Disorder vs. Malingering
FD: Enjoys attention when the person is pretending to be sick
Malingering: Someone is faking an illness to escape an issue. Or fake mental illness to get disability checks
Anorexia Nervosa vs. Bulimia Nervosa vs. Binge Eating Disorder
AN: Someone who restricts dietary intake and not meet body’s need; Distorted body image (Ex-GF Jess)
BN:
Consist of binge-eating (much longer portion of food & out of control when engaged in eats)
Purging (using laxatives to remove excess of what’s being consumed)
BED: Only when constating eating/ NO purging is present here.
Depersonalization/ Derealization Disorder vs. Dissociative Amnesia vs. Dissociative Identity Disorder
DDD: Reports feeling outside their body
DA: Person forgets who they are due to a traumatic event
DID: Multiple personality disorder; two or more distinct personality states
Genito-Pelvic Pain/ Penetration Disorder vs. Female Sexual Interest/ Arousal Disorder
GPP/PD: Fear of pain during intercourse; Could occur with traumatic reponse to SA/ DV
FSI/ AD: Decline/ lack of physical intimacy; Couples therapy- this can be explorable topic
Insomnia Disorder vs. Hypersomnolence Disorder
ID: Someone has difficulty sleeping/ early morning waking & falling asleep; (rule out Manic phase); (happens 3x per week for 3 months)
HD: Excessive sleepiness that lasts for 7-9 hours; Common w/ overweight people; Rule out Depression/ Medications
Nightmare Disorder vs. Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Disorder
ND: Quickly oriented & can recall content of nightmare
NREMSD: Previously Night Terrors; sleepwalking & can’t recall events
Central Sleep Apnea vs. Narcolepsy
CSA: Person stops breathing when they are asleep and this disrupts quality of sleep (can’t enter REM sleep)
Narcolepsy: Sudden attack of sleep (falls asleep easily or without warning); experience daytime fatigue
Intermittent Explosive Disorder vs. Kleptomania vs. Trichotillomania
IED: Trouble with controlling angry impulsive outbreaks
K: Compulsive stealing for wanting to get the “rush” of it; Thrill seeking behavior
T: Compulsion to pull out their own body hair; Attached to abuse & trauma in shameful recollection of client’s own past
