Angular motion
Movement around a fixed point/axis
When does angular motion occur?
when a force is applied outside the center of mass
torque
the rotational force that causes an object to turn around an axis of rotation
Angular distance
Angle of rotation about the axis (measured in degrees or radians) ex: Ballet turn - angular distance = 360 degrees
Angular displacement
The smallest change in the angle between a start and finish point (measured in degrees or radians) Ex: Ballet turn - angular displacement = 0 degrees
Angular velocity
Rate of change of angular displacement (measured in radians/seconds)
Angular acceleration
Rate of change of angular velocity
Newton’s first law of angular motion
Law of conservation of angular momentum
The law of conservation of angular momentum states that
A rotating body will continue to turn with constant angular momentum unless an external force acts on it
Newton’s second law of angular motion
Law of angular acceleration
The law of angular acceleration states that
The angular acceleration of a body is proportional to the torque causing it
Newton’s third law of angular motion
Law of angular reaction
The law of angular reaction states that
for every torque that is exerted by one body on another, there is an equal and opposite torque exerted back
