What is a Trait in psychology?
A characteristic pattern of behavior or disposition to feel and act in certain ways, as assessed by self-report inventories and peer reports.
What is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)?
The most widely used personality test, primarily for assessing emotional disorders.
What are the Big Five Factors in personality theory?
Five traits that describe personality: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (OCEAN).
What does the Social-Cognitive Perspective emphasize?
The interaction between people’s traits and their social context in influencing behavior.
What is self-esteem?
Our feelings of high or low self-worth.
Define self-efficacy.
Our sense of competence and effectiveness.
What is the Drive-Reduction Theory?
The idea that a physiological need creates an aroused state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need.
What is homeostasis?
The tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state.
Explain the Yerkes-Dodson Law.
The principle that performance increases with arousal only up to a point, beyond which performance decreases.
What is intrinsic motivation?
The desire to perform a behavior effectively for its own sake.
What is extrinsic motivation?
The desire to perform a behavior to receive promised rewards or avoid threatened punishment.
What is obesity classified as in terms of BMI?
Defined as a body mass index (BMI) measurement of 30 or higher.
