What is the predictability of volcanoes?

They are not very predictable, even with close monitoring but there can be warning signs (eg tremors, gas, shape, magnetic field etc)

2
New cards

What theory can be used to try and predict volcanoes?

Gap theory

3
New cards

Are large volcano events frequent?

No - the larger the event, the less frequent it is as it needs time to build up energy (magma and gases)

4
New cards

Do volcanoes have a long or short duration of hazards?

Long - with many hazards continuing for months, years or decades (Monserrat)

5
New cards

What is the speed of onset for volcanoes like?

It can take weeks, months or years from ash and gases release to full eruption

6
New cards

What is the volcanic areal extent like?

Lava and pyroclastic flow can be on a local scale but ash clouds can be continental and block off airspace (eg Iceland eruption)
