What are the two main types of cells?
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic.
What does “prokaryotic” mean?
“Pro” = before/false, “karyon” = kernel (nucleus); these cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus.
What does “eukaryotic” mean?
“Eu” = true, “karyon” = kernel; these cells have a true, membrane-bound nucleus.
How do eukaryotic cells differ from prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are larger, have internal membranes and organelles, and a true nucleus. Prokaryotic cells lack these and have DNA in a nucleoid region.
What does microbiology study?
Bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
