what is a pilot study?
a small scale trial run of the actual investigation - it uses a handful of participants to ‘road test’ the procedure.
why are pilot studies useful?
researchers can identify any potential issues and modify the design or procedure, saving time and money in the long run.
what is a single blind procedure?
when participants are not told the aim of the research or condition they are in to control demand characteristics.
what is a double blind procedure?
neither the participant or the researcher conducting the study know the aims or the condition the participant is in. this minimises the researcher effects and demand characteristics of the participants.
this is often used in drug trials, where one group is given a placebo
