Amygdala
Linked to emotion, especially towards fear, anger, aggression, and hostility.
Cerebellum
Coordinates voluntary movement, balance, motor skills, and muscle coordination. Known as the "Little Brain" at rear of brainstem.
Hypothalamus
Controls maintenance functions such as eating, governs the endocrine system, and is linked to emotion and reward. The hypothalamus also governs the amount of fear, thirst, sexual drive, and aggression we feel
Medulla
Major part of the brain stem. It focuses on localizing in breathing and heart rate.
Motor Cortex
Generates signals to direct the movement of the body.
Pons
Works with the cerebellum to help coordinate movement, balance, and posture along with sleep control. Regulates respiration and auditory information.
Reticular Formation
Helps control arousal (awake/asleep) and attention/habituation.
Sensory Cortex
The area of the brain that is responsible for receiving and processing sensory information.
Thalamus
Relays messages between the lower brain centers/sensory organs to the cerebral cortex.
Known as the "sensory switchboard"
Reroute signals; think ATL Airport
Visual Cortex
The visual processing areas of cortex in the occipital and temporal lobes.
