Social Determinants of Health
Aspects of society and the social environment that have an impact on health.
Socioeconomic Determinants
Conditions in which people are born, grow up, live, work, and age.
Environmental Determinants
Factors occurring externally to the person but also including behaviours undertaken by the individual that place them at risk.
Built Environment
Aspects of our surroundings created or modified by people.
Natural Environment
All the organisms, elements, and landscapes found on earth.
Biomedical Determinants
Factors relating to the body that impact on health.
Food
Substances that consist of nutrients used by the body to sustain growth, complete vital processes, and maintain energy.
Addiction
A condition in which a person is unable to stop using a substance or engaging in a behaviour.
Unemployment
Occurs when someone is willing and able to work but does not have a paid job.
Culture
An umbrella term which encompasses the social behaviour and norms found in human societies.
Early Life
The period from prenatal development to eight years of age, with remarkable brain growth and development.
Transport
The movement of goods or persons from place to place.
Stress
A state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.
Work
An activity that a person uses physical or mental effort to do usually for money.
Social Support
A network of family, friends, neighbours, and community members that is available in times of need.
Social Exclusion
A situation where not everyone has equal access to the opportunities and services that allow them to lead a decent, happy life.
Social Gradient
A term used to describe the phenomenon whereby people who are less advantaged in terms of socioeconomic position have worse health and shorter lives than those who are more advantaged.
Family
A group of 2 or more persons related by birth, marriage or adoption.
Access to Services
The ability of people to reach places and services.
Migration
A term used to refer to people who are forced to leave their homes for many reasons, including conflict and violence.
Employment
A relationship between two parties regulating the provision of paid labour services.
Food Security
The state of having reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food.
Income
Refers to money coming in either for work done, interest of profit from capital invested or rent from a property or land that is set.
Neighborhood/Housing
A geographically localized community within a larger city, town, suburb or rural area and the buildings, including homes within it.
Education
A purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, such as transmitting knowledge or fostering skills.
Values
Principles by which one lives their life and moral standards or compass that guides decision making.
