Adrenal Glands

One of the two endocrine glands; located one above each kidney.

Endocrine Glands

Ductless gland that produces an internal secretion discharged into the blood/lymph.

Hormones

Chemical substance secreted by an organ or gland.

Ovaries

Endocrine gland or gonad that produces hormones and the female sex cell (ovum).

Pancreas

Gland that is dorsal to the stomach; secretes insulin and digestive juices.

Pituitary Gland

Small, rounded endocrine gland at the base of the brain; regulates function of other endocrine glands and body processes.

Placenta

Temporary endocrine gland created during pregnancy to provide nourishment for fetus.

Thyroid Gland

Endocrine gland that is located in the neck and regulates body metabolism.

Testes

Gonads or endocrine gland that are located in the scrotum of the male; produces sperm & male hormones.

Bartholin’s Glands

Two small mucous glands near the vaginal opening.

Cowper’s Glands

The pair of small mucous glands near the male urethra.

Ejaculatory Ducts

In the male; duct or tube from the seminal vesicle to the urethra.

Fallopian Tubes

Oviducts; in the female, passageway for the ova (egg) from the ovary to the uterus.

Labia Majora

Two large folds of adipose tissue lying on each side of the vulva in the female; hairy outer lips.

Labia Minora

Two folds of membrane lying inside the labia majora; hairless inner lips.

OVaries

Endocrine gland or gonad that produces hormones and the female sex cell of ovum.

Penis

External sex organ of the male.

Prostate Gland

In the male, gland near the urethra; contract during ejaculation to prevent the escape of urine.

Reproductive System

Body system that produces new life; consists of gonads, ducts to carry the sex cells and secretions, and accessory organs.

Seminal Vesicles

One of two saclike structures behind the bladder and connected to vas deferens; secretes thick, viscous fluid for semen.

Urethra

Tube that carries urine from the urinary bladder to outside the body.

Uterus

Muscular, hollow organ that serves as the organ of menstruation and the area for fetus development.

Vulva

External female genitalia; includes the labia majora, labia minora, and clitoris.
