The Constructed Nature of Perception
Speaks to the constructed (and often subjective) nature of perception.
Why is The Distinction Between Physical and Perceptual Properties Important?
They are not always equivalent
Response: Compression vs Expansion
Response Compression: as intensity increases, the percieved magnitude increases more slowly than the actual increase in intensity. (Brightness perception)
Response Expansion: as intensity increases, the percieved magnitude increases more quickly the actual increase in intensity. (Pain perception)
How do we Reduce Uncertainty about what’s happening in our enviroment?
• Active information gathering
• Predictive processing

How does context affect perception?
It works through top-down processing, where our expectations and surroundings guide what we percieve.

How does multimodal processing shape our perception?
It shapes perception by intergrating info from multiple senses into a single coherent experience.
McGurk effect
What we see influences hearing.
E.g. You see someone mouth one sound (far) but hear the sound (bar). Despite that, your brain creates a 3rd combined perception of the two stimuli.
