What is natural selection
Process where characteristics of a populations change over many generations
It happens because individuals with certain traits survive specific local environmental conditions and pass on their traits to their offspring
Selective pressures
Biotic - predators/parasites/competition for resources
Abiotic - rock color/flood/temperature/drought/volcanic eruption
What steps lead to natural selection?
Variation - organisms have differences
Heredity - parents pass differences down to their offspring
Fitness - some differences become more common because they are passed on to more offspring
Selection - these differences become more common because they are passed on to more offspring
Artificial Selection
Selective pressure exerted by humans on populations in order to improve or modify particular desirable traits
