Metabolic Calculations
Methods used to estimate energy expenditure and oxygen consumption during physical activities.
CRF
Cardiorespiratory Fitness, reflecting the integrated function of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and muscles.
Absolute O2 Consumption
Volume of oxygen consumed per unit of time, expressed in liters per minute (L·min−1).
Relative O2 Consumption
Volume of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body mass per minute, expressed in mL·kg−1·min−1.
METs
Metabolic equivalents; a measure of energy expenditure, where 1 MET equals 3.5 mL·kg−1·min−1.
Energy Expenditure
The amount of energy that a person uses during physical activities, expressed in calories (kcal).
Oxygen Cost
The amount of oxygen required to perform a specific physical activity, which can be converted to energy expenditure.
RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio)
The ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed, used to assess fuel utilization (carbohydrates vs fats).
Caloric Expenditure
The amount of energy expressed in calories that is burned during an activity.
HRR (Heart Rate Reserve)
Method of estimating exercise intensity using the difference between maximal heart rate and resting heart rate.
