Gestalt principles
Rules/laws of human perception
Proximity (grouping)
Things that are closer together appear to be more related than things that are further apart, close arrangement of elements creates a group association
Similarity
Things that share visual characteristics (shape, size, colour, texture) will be seen as belonging together
Anomaly
A particular element can be emphasized by being dissimilar as it breaks the pattern of similarity
Continuation
Eye is drawn along a path, line or curve to see a continuous figure rather than separate lines to draw attention to another element in the design
Closure
Utilizes the human eyes tendency to see closed shapes by filling in missing information
Symmetry
Elements that are symmetrical to each other and equally balanced tend to be perceives as a unified group
Figure and ground
Eyes tendency to see and separate objects from their surrounding background.
