Three primary types epithelial membranes:
• Mucous membranes
• Serous membranes
• Cutaneous membranes
Mucous Membranes:
line body cavities that open to the exterior
• Including hollow organs of digestive, respiratory, urogenital tracts
Epithelial sheet:
lies over layer of loose connective tissue called lamina propria
Serous Membranes
are moist membranes of closed, ventral body cavities
Parietal serosae
line internal body cavity walls
Visceral serosae
cover internal organs
Pleural Membrane:
surrounds the lungs in the two pleural cavities
• reduces friction between the lungs and the body wall.
• Parietal pleura is further subdivided into:
• — costal pleura
• — diaphragmatic pleura
• — mediastinal pleura
Pericardial Membrane:
surrounds the heart in the pericardial
cavity
