Gluteus maximus
Extends and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint. It also helps maintain an erect posture when standing.
Gluteus medius
Abducts and medially rotates the thigh. It also stabilizes the pelvis during walking or running.
Biceps femoris
Flexes the knee joint and extends the hip joint. It also helps rotate the leg laterally when the knee is flexed.
Tensor fascia lata
Pulls the thigh posteriorly and laterally.
Tibialis anterior
Dorsiflexes and inverts the foot at the ankle joint. It also supports the medial longitudinal arch of the foot during walking and running.
Extensor digitorum longus
Extend the toes, Dorsiflexes the foot at the ankle joint, helping to lift the toes off the ground during walking.
Gastrocnemius
Plantarflexes the foot at the ankle joint (points the foot downward) and assists in flexing the leg at the knee joint. It plays a major role in walking, running, and jumping.
Pinna
Gathers and funnels sound waves efficiently into the ear canal to aid in hearing.
External acoustic meatus
Channels sound waves from the pinna to the eardrum for transmission to the middle ear.
Upper eyelid
Protects the eye from foreign particles and bright light; helps spread tears to keep the eye moist.
Lower eyelid
Protects the eye and directs tears toward drainage to maintain lubrication and clear debris.
Nictitating membrane
Moves horizontally across the eye to provide protection, moisture, and maintain clarity.
Lips
Assist in suckling by creating a seal and helping draw milk during nursing.
Cheeks
Help create suction and manipulate food or milk during suckling and feeding.
Nares
Openings of the nose that warm, humidify, and filter incoming air to protect the respiratory system and lungs.
Digits
Used for grasping, manipulating objects, and providing sensory feedback essential for fine motor skills.
Umbilical cord
Connects the developing fetus to the placenta, allowing nutrient, oxygen, and waste exchange between mother and fetus.
Nipples
Serve as outlets for milk produced by mammary glands, enabling feeding and nourishment of offspring.
Urogenital opening
Serves as the exit point for urine and reproductive fluids.
Papilla (in front of urogenital opening)
Releases milk from mammary glands to nurse piglets; functionally similar to nipples.
Anus
The terminal opening of the digestive tract through which solid waste (feces) is expelled from the body.
