Eleanor Roosevelt

• 1st lady and social reformer

• Pushed FDR to appoint women to govt.

• (Distantly related to FDR)

Farm Security Administration (FSA,1937)

• helped tenant farmers become landowners (renters to owners)

• Hired photographers to document rural towns and farms (make people aware of the poverty)

Work Progress Administration (WPA, 1935)

• quickly created unskilled jobs

• $11 billion for spent for construction → employed 8 million

National Youth Administration (NYA, 1935)

Provided education, jobs, and counseling to 2 million young people and needy students (ages 16-25)

Wagner Act (WA, 1935)

• defined unfair labor practices

• Allowed workers to join unions and engage in collective bargaining (negotiations between employer and labor unions)

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA, 1938)

Set max work hours a week and minimum wage

Social Security Act (SSA, 1935)

Provided aid (very similar to pension) for:

1. Old-age insurance for retirees 65 or older

2. Unemployment compensation

3. Families w/ dependent children and the disabled

(One of the most important achievements of the New Deal)

Rural Electrification Administration (REA, 1935)

money to bring electricity to isolated, rural areas (like TVA but nationwide)
