The Popular belief that the US had a divine mission to extend its power and civilization across the whole continent of North America
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
An agreement that ended the Mexican–American War and resulted in the U.S. acquiring a vast amount of territory, such as present-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah. It also established the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico. Renewed tensions put on hold by the Missouri compromise
Compromise of 1850
Proposed by Henry Clay, this compromise proposed to admit California as a free state, admit texas as a slave state, enact a stronger slave law that allowed catchers into the North, and allowed popular sovereignty to determine the status of slavery in future states
Nativism
The idea that native born whites in America were superior to all immigrants
Cause of Nativism
Rise of immigrants moving into the US during the mid to late 1800s, especially that of Irish and German immigrants, who moved into cities in the northeast and lived in ethnic neighborhoods
Effect of Nativism
Groups such as the Know Nothing Party formed in an effort to oppose the influx of immigrants of differing traditions and faiths, as well as those that might compete for jobs. They worked to slow immigration down while limiting citizenship and the right to vote
