Globalization
The increasing interconnectedness of world economies, leading to cross-border movement of work, goods, and services.
Outsourcing
Getting work done by a third party, often in another country, to reduce costs or access specialized skills.
Offshoring
Relocating production or services to another country for cost advantages, often overlapping with outsourcing.
Service economy
An economy dominated by services (IT, finance, consulting) rather than manufacturing, often shaped by globalization.
Current Population Survey
A US government survey that collects labor market information (employment status, weeks worked, etc.) to study workforce dynamics.
Population census
The official count of a country's population and basic demographic characteristics, used for planning and representation.
Labor mobility
The ability and willingness of workers to change jobs or locations in response to opportunities, shocks, or policy changes.
Upward mobility via outsourcing
The phenomenon where outsourced workers move into higher-skilled roles, such as managerial positions within outsourcing arrangements.
Downward displacement
Workers who lose ground in earnings or job status due to increased global competition, sometimes shifting to lower-skilled roles.
Data-driven research
Research that uses large datasets and empirical analysis to identify patterns and test hypotheses.
International business
The study and practice of cross-border trade, investment, and corporate strategy in a global environment.
Canvas
The learning management system used to post syllabus, materials, assignments, and announcements.
Syllabus
The course document outlining objectives, schedule, policies, and requirements.
News and case presentations
Weekly activities in which students present current events and business cases and lead class discussions.
Apprenticeship learning model
A teaching approach where students gain experience by actively presenting and guiding discussions, akin to an apprenticeship.
Course administration
The administrative aspects of running the course (calendars, postings, communications).
Textbook currency
The relevance and timeliness of a textbook; newer editions may still be partly outdated for current events.
Course communication forum
An online space where students and instructor exchange questions and discussions about the course content.
Preferred contact method
The instructor's preferred way to be contacted (e.g., Instagram, email, etc.).
