Engine Oil Level Check
Open bonnet, identify dip-stick, remove, wipe, dip, remove again, oil should be between min/max markers.
Engine Coolant Level Check
Open bonnet, find coolant tank, check max/min levels on the side (never open when hot).
Windscreen Washer Level Check
Open bonnet, identify windscreen washer reservoir, open and check sufficient fluid inside.
Brake Fluid Level Check
Open bonnet, find brake fluid reservoir, check fluid level against max/min levels on the side.
Brakes Working Check
Start car, drive slowly forward, apply foot brake. Pedal should feel firm, not spongy, and stop the car.
Tyre Pressure Check
Find tyre pressure information in car manual. Use tyre pressure gauge to check and adjust accordingly.
Tyre Condition and Tread Depth Check
Use tread depth gauge to measure tread. Legally, it should be no less than 1.6mm in the central ¾, and no cuts/bulges.
Head Restraint Adjustment
Adjust so the rigid part is at least as high as your eyes (or top of ears) and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
Headlights and Tail Lights Check
Turn ignition on, turn headlights on, check front headlights and rear tail lights are working properly from the pavement.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Problem
Start engine, warning light will stay illuminated on the dashboard if a fault exists.
Brake Lights Check
Turn ignition on (don't start car), ask someone to check brake lights while you press the foot brake. Or check reflection.
Power Assisted Steering Check
Start car, move steering wheel left and right. It should feel easy and light to steer, not heavy.
Windscreen Cleaning
Turn the ignition on and operate the windscreen washer lever.
Direction Indicators Check
Turn hazard warning lights on, get out, and check front and back indicators are working on both sides from the pavement.
Demisting Front and Rear Screens
Turn fan on, twist middle dial to blow onto front window, press rear demister button, turn right dial for warm air.
Horn Check
Press the center of the steering wheel and listen for a sound.
Fog Light(s) Use
Turn ignition on, dipped headlights on, then rear fog light. Use only if visibility is poor (less than 100 metres). Check warning light.
Handbrake (Parking Brake) Excessive Wear Check
Press foot brake, release handbrake, re-apply. Handbrake shouldn't come up too high, and car shouldn't move when releasing foot brake.
Switching Headlights to Main Beam
Turn ignition on. Twist light switch to dipped, then pull left lever towards you for main beam. Blue warning light displayed on dashboard.
