Standby energy
The energy that a device draws while it's waiting to be used; also referred to as phantom load.
Phantom load
The energy that a device draws while it's waiting to be used; also referred to as standby energy.
Biomass
Any organic material made from trees, plants, and animal waste, used as a renewable energy source.
Geothermal energy
Energy that comes straight from the earth, using heat from the ground to warm buildings.
Hydro-electricity
Electricity generated by water, accounting for more than 60% of the electricity used in Canada.
Passive solar energy
A form of solar energy, like opening curtains in winter so sunshine helps heat the room.
Active solar energy
A form of solar energy that uses solar panels to create electricity.
Greenhouse Effect
The process by which the atmosphere absorbs heat from the sun, keeping the Earth warm.
Greenhouse Gases (GHGs)
Gases that are present in the atmosphere that absorb heat.
Global Warming
The gradual increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
