Scientific Method
A systematic process used for scientific investigation, consisting of steps: Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data Collection, Conclusion, and Communication.
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation made on limited evidence that must be testable and clearly defined.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured or observed in response to changes in the independent variable.
Metric System
A decimal-based system of measurement used in science, including units such as meter (m), gram (g), liter (L), and degrees Celsius (°C).
Centi-
A metric prefix meaning one-hundredth (0.01 or 1/100).
Kilo-
A metric prefix meaning one thousand (1000).
Total Magnification
The product of the eyepiece magnification and the objective magnification in microscopy.
Coarse Focus
The adjustment used for initial focusing of a microscope.
Fine Focus
The adjustment used for delicate focusing of a microscope.
