Head and Neck Muscles

Frontalis

Muscle of facial expression in the forehead; raises eyebrows, wrinkles skin.

Orbicularis oris

Muscle of facial expression around the mouth; compresses & purses lips.

Orbicularis oculi

Muscle of facial expression around the eyes; closes eyes.

Buccinator

Muscle of facial expression in the cheek; compresses cheek (e.g., blowing).

Masseter

Muscle of mastication in the jaw; elevates mandible.

Temporalis

Muscle of mastication on the side of the skull; elevates mandible.

Sternocleidomastoid

Muscle of the neck; action includes neck flexion and lateral flexion. Originates from the sternum and clavicle, inserts on the mastoid process of the temporal bone.

Splenius Capitis

Muscle at the back of the neck; extends neck.

Rectus Abdominis

Muscle at the front of the abdomen; trunk flexion.

External Obliques

Muscle on the side of the trunk; trunk flexion, lateral flexion, compresses abdomen.

Transversus Abdominis

Deep abdomen muscle; compresses abdomen.

External Intercostals

Muscles between ribs; elevate ribs.

Internal Intercostals

Muscles between ribs; depress ribs.

Diaphragm

Muscle below lungs; increases/decreases thoracic volume.

Trapezius

Muscle in the upper back; elevates, retracts, depresses scapula.

Serratus Anterior

Muscle on the side of the ribcage; protracts scapula.

Deltoid

Shoulder muscle; abducts humerus.

Supraspinatus

Upper scapula muscle; abducts humerus.

Teres Minor

Rotator cuff muscle; laterally rotates humerus.

Teres Major

Muscle below teres minor; adducts & medially rotates humerus.

Latissimus Dorsi

Back muscle; extends, adducts, & medially rotates humerus.

Pectoralis Major

Chest muscle; flexes, adducts, & medially rotates humerus.

Biceps Brachii

Front upper arm muscle; flexes and supinates forearm.

Brachioradialis

Forearm muscle; flexes forearm.

Triceps Brachii

Back of upper arm muscle; extends forearm.

Pronator Teres

Forearm muscle; pronates forearm.

Flexor carpi ulnaris

Wrist muscle; wrist flexion. Originates from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and ulna, and inserts on the pisiform, hamate, and 5th metacarpal

Flexor carpi radialis

Wrist muscle; wrist flexion. Originates from the medial epicondyle of humerus and inserts on the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals

Extensor carpi ulnaris

Wrist muscle; wrist extension. Originates from the lateral epicondyle of humerus and inserts on the 5th metacarpal

Extensor carpi radialis

Wrist muscle; wrist extension. Originates from the lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus and inserts on the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals
