What are the four events of respiration?
Pulmonary ventilation, external respiration, respiratory gas transport, internal respiration.
What is pulmonary ventilation?
The act of breathing; moving air into and out of the lungs.
What structures are involved in external respiration?
Lungs, alveoli, pulmonary veins, and arteries.
What occurs during external respiration?
Oxygen is loaded into the blood and carbon dioxide is unloaded from the blood.
What is respiratory gas transport?
The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the body's tissues.
What is internal respiration?
The exchange of gases between blood and body tissues.
What structures are involved in internal respiration?
Blood, organ tissue, systemic veins, and arteries.
What occurs during cellular respiration?
Oxygen is used to produce ATP from glucose, resulting in carbon dioxide as a byproduct.
What are non-respiratory gas movements?
Reflexes and involuntary actions that move gas without direct involvement in respiration.
What are three factors that aid in the diffusion of gas during external respiration?
Surface area, thinness of the respiratory membrane, and pressure differences.
How does exercise affect diffusion of gases?
Increased blood flow and decreased equilibration time for gas loading and unloading.
What does partial pressure refer to in the context of respiration?
The pressure exerted by a particular gas in a mixture of gases, crucial for gas exchange.
