What does metadata help do?

not make generalizations, used to filter and organize

Causation

definitive conclusion; this is the cause of the result

Correlation

• relationship between two pieces of data, refers to the amount that one varies in relation to the other

• There’s a connection, but it may not be definitive

Does correlation equal causation?

No, collernation is similar, pattern, and causation is the thing that caused

Cleaning data

process that makes the data uniform without changing its meaning (ex. rereplacing all equivalent abbreviations, spellings, and capitalizations with the same word)

Data filtering

choosing a smaller subset of a data set to use for analysis (eliminating/keeping only certain rows in a table)

Citizen science

research done with help from the public, where people—often non-scientists—use their own devices to collect and share data.

Crowdsourcing

practice of obtaining input or information from a larger number of people via the internet

Data Bias

data that doesn’t accurately reflect the full population or phenomenon being studied

Information

collection of facts and patterns extracted from data
