Alcoholism
Any use of alcohol that interferes with personal life affecting school, jobs, family, friends, health, the law, and spiritual life.
The Three C's of Alcohol Problems
Continued use despite negative consequences, Compulsive use, Loss of control of use.
Addiction
Physical and/or psychological dependence upon mood-altering substances or experiences.
Cross-addict
An individual treated for one type of substance who stops using it and becomes addicted to another drug.
Drug of choice
The specific substance that a person has abused.
Polyaddicts
Individuals who abuse more than one substance.
Co-Occurring Disorders
Having one or more disorders related to substance use and one or more mental disorders that are independent of each other.
Commonly Abused Substances
Includes alcohol, depressants, narcotics, stimulants, hallucinogens, and inhalants.
Costs Associated with Substance Abuse
Includes costs of treatment, loss of productivity, accidents, legal costs, and increased parental neglect and abuse.
At-Risk Populations
Groups more likely to experience substance abuse, such as adolescents, elderly, women, and children dealing with parental addictions.
Reasons for Substance Abuse
Can include biological predisposition, efforts to self-medicate, excitement, peer pressure, stress, and performance improvement.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
A self-help group for individuals struggling with alcohol abuse/dependence.
Comprehensive Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Act
Legislation that provided assistance for prevention, treatment, research, and training related to alcohol abuse.
Types of Interventions
Considerations include the type of client and may include family systems, detox, inpatient, and outpatient treatment.
Chronic
A term describing a condition that is long-lasting and persistent.
Progressive
A characteristic of a disease that typically worsens over time.
