Stages of the Sleep Cycle
NREM 1, NREM2, NREM3, REM
Awake
Beta Waves
NREM 1
Alpha Waves, very light sleep and easy to awake
NREM 2
Theta Waves, slower theta waves, longer sleep
NREM 3
Delta Waves, deepest stage of sleep, gets shorter throughout the night, sleepwalking and talking, night terrors
REM
Beta Waves, high internal activity, rapid eye movement, dreaming, increased heart rate and blood pressure, muscles are paralyzed, gets longer throughout the night
Restoration Theory of Sleep
Our bodies wear out during the day, sleep is for replenishing energy and resources
Memory Consolidation Theory of Sleep
Sleep helps us rebuild our memories from the day, memory consolidation occurs during REM
Energy Conservation Theory of Sleep
Based on the evolutionary approach, sleep protects us as it was a way to preserve energy during parts of the day where we may be exposed to danger, helps animals adapt to their environments
