Manifest Destiny

Belief that America was destined to control the entirety of the North American continent. US policies would be centered on accomplishing this goal.

Lone Star Republic

After the massacre at the Alamo, Texans were rallied and rebelled against Santa Anna.

Gadsden Purchase

A $10 million dollar purchase that forced Mexico to sell us more territory or fight another war. The land was meant for a new transcontinental railroad.

Mexican Cession

Treaty ending the Mexican American war. Mexico forfeited California, New Mexico Territory, and Texas to the United states. Many see this as the fulfillment of Manifest Destiny.

Oregon Territory

territory of Oregon, Washington, and portions of what became British Columbia, Canada; land claimed by both U.S. and Britain and held jointly under the Convention of 1818
