What is a democracy?
A form of government where people have the authority to make laws or choose government officials.
What is the Australian Constitution?
The rulebook by which Australia is run, establishing how the government is run and its powers.
According to Section 51, what are some powers the Parliament has?
Trade and commerce, taxation, borrowing money, census and statistics, quarantine, currency, and immigration.
What is a referendum?
A general vote by the electorate on a single political question for a direct decision, used to change the constitution.
What is the structure of Australia's Federal Parliament?
Australia has a bicameral system, divided into the House of Representatives and the Senate.
What is the role of the House of Representatives?
To propose laws and debate issues.
What is the role of the Senate?
To review and edit laws.
What are political parties?
Groups of people who share similar views about important issues.
What does the Australian Labor Party believe in?
Providing support for people through social security and healthcare.
What does the Liberal Party believe in?
Lowering taxes to encourage individual incentive and wealth.
What do The Greens believe in?
Minimising the impact of climate change.
What does the National Party believe in?
Providing assistance to farmers experiencing droughts or issues with crops.
What is a social movement?
A collective effort by a large group of people to bring about or resist social, political, or cultural change.
What is the focus of the Black Lives Matter movement?
Protests against systemic racism and police brutality, racial justice, police reform, equal rights and highlighting indigenous deaths and racial discrimination.
What are some ways social movements create change?
Protests, rallies, letter writing campaigns, social media campaigns, petitions, civil disobedience.
