Pure Element
A substance that consists of only one type of atom.
Compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
Substance
Matter with a composition that is always the same.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Alloy
A mixture of two or more metals.
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Ionic Bond
A chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Covalent Bond
A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture with uneven distribution of different substances.
Chemical Properties
Characteristics of a substance that determine how it will react with other substances.
Physical Properties
Characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
Density
The degree of compactness of a substance measured in grams per cubic centimeter.
Mass/Volume Percent
The ratio of the mass of each element to the total mass of the compound expressed as a percentage.
Colloid
A mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in homogeneous mixtures.
Suspension
A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration.
Miscible
Liquids that dissolve freely in one another in any proportion.
Soluble
Capable of being dissolved.
Metallic Bond
A bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them.
Valence Electrons
The electrons in the outermost shell of an atom involved in forming bonds.
Alkanes
A hydrocarbon containing only single covalent bonds.
Alkenes
Hydrocarbons with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds.
Polymer
A long molecule consisting of many similar or identical monomers linked together.
