BANNING OF POLITICAL PARTIES

  • On 8th April, 1960 the ANC and PAC were banned, under the '"Unlawful Organisations Act”. This damaged the reputation of the ANC, especially seeing as it was the PAC campaign that caused it, even though they were preparing to move to an armed struggle eventually. The South African government resorted to such an abrupt and forceful response as they were rattled and wanted to assert control and reassure investors and white citizens that they were in charge, adressing their uncertainty after the Sharpeville Massacre

  • On 30th March 1960, a over 10,000 protesters were arrested including Mandela and other ANC members leading to their prosecutions in the reason trial.
