even so, let me not die ingloriously without a fight, without some great deed done for future men to learn of".
so speaking he drew the sharp sword that hung long and heavy by his side,
and he gathered himself together and charged like a high flying eagle
who rushes through the dark clouds to the plain to snatch a feeble lamb or a cowering hare:
so hector swooped to attack, flourishing his sharp sword.
and achilles charged against him, his heart filled with savage fury,
and he held his shield in front of his chest to protect, him, his fine, well-made shield
and his gleaming helmet with its four crests nodded above:
and the bright golden hairs
which hephaistos had set thickly around the ridge shook around it.
as the evening star goes among the stars in the darkness of the night,
the loveliest star which stands in the sky,
such was the light gleaming from the point of his sharp spear which achilles shook in his right hand
as he purposed death for godlike hector, looking over his fine body for where it best offered a target.
all the rest of his body was covered by his bronze armour, the fine armour
which he had taken from the mighty patroklos when he had killed him.
but flesh showed where the collarbones divide the neck from the shoulders- the throat,
where the destruction of a man's life is the quickest.
that was where god-like achilles drove at him eagerly with his spear,
and the point went right through the soft neck.
but the ash spear with its weight of bronze did not sever the windpipe,
so that hector could still speak and answer achilles.
