Blood Transfusion
The process of transferring blood or blood components from one person into another.
De Motu Cordis
A book by Dr. William Harvey that detailed the circulatory system and paved the way for blood investigation.
Animal-to-Human Transfusion
The process of transfusing blood from an animal to a human, first performed by Dr. Jean Baptiste Denys.
ABO Blood Group
The classification system for blood types discovered by Dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1901.
Compatibility Testing
A procedure to ensure that the donor's and recipient's blood types are compatible prior to transfusion.
Sodium Citrate
A compound discovered in 1914 that is used as an anticoagulant in blood transfusions.
Postpartum Hemorrhage
Severe bleeding following the birth of a baby, which may require a blood transfusion.
RBC Lysis
The breakdown of red blood cells, observed in transfusion reactions, such as by Emil Ponfick.
First Blood Donor Service
Established in 1921 by Percy Oliver, it organized voluntary blood donations.
Blood Group Inheritance
The genetic transmission of blood types, proven by Felix Bernstein in 1924.
