Synovial membrane

surrounds freely movable joints, secretes synovial fluid for joint lubrication

Serous membrane

often double-folded, secretes watery fluid, covers organs and cavities; three types: pleura (lungs), peritoneum (abdomen),
pericardium (heart)

Parietal membrane

contacts body cavities

Visceral membrane

contacts/covers organs

Mesentery (Peritoneum)

wraps around organs and intestines
and attaches them to muscles in back of abdomen.

Omentum (Peritoneum)

apron-like part of the peritoneum which
covers front of abdominal organs.

Retroperitoneal

area lies behind peritoneum and contains the kidneys.

Cranial

brain and pituitary gland.

Thoracic

pleural cavity and mediastinum.

Mediastinum

heart, aorta, trachea, esophagus, thymus gland,
bronchial tubes and many lymph-nodes.

Abdominal

stomach, intestines, spleen, pancreas,
liver, gallbladder and kidneys.

Pelvic

portions of the intestines, rectum, ureters
urinary bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina (females), and prostate (males).

Spinal

spinal cord.

Inguinal

pertaining to the groin (aka iliac region)
