What does the CNS consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the CNS responsible for?
Primarily our integrative function
Integrative function
Receives all stimuli from sensory neurons, analyzes it, and decided what to do with it (respond/memory)
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater
Dura mater
outermost layer of meninges
Arachnoid mater
Middle layer of meninges, contains space called subarachnoid space
What is the subarachnoid space filled with
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that functions as a shock absorber
Pia mater
Innermost layer of meninges that is a tough protective layer, protects brain and spinal cord from physical damage and infection that covers CNS
Brain development
Starts early on in development (by week 3 after conception as a neural tube (aka embryonic brain)
What does the neural tube develop into
3 distinct parts: rhombencephalon, mesencephalon, prosencephalon
Rhombencephalon
1st bump of neural tube that develops into cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and pons
Mesencephalon
2nd bump of the neural tube that develops into midbrain
Prosencephalon
3rd bump of neural tube that divides into two sections: telencephalon and diencephalon
Telencephalon vs diencephalon
Telencephalon develops into cerebrum while diencephalon develops into interbrain
