Limited Democracy
A system of government where only a portion of the population has the right to participate in decision-making.
Direct Democracy
A form of government in which citizens directly participate in decision-making.
City-State
A small independent state consisting of a city and its surrounding territory, particularly prevalent in ancient Greece.
Polis
A term used in ancient Greece to define a city-state and its political organization.
Pax Romana
A period of relative peace and stability across the Roman Empire that lasted approximately 200 years.
Socrates
An influential Greek philosopher known for his contributions to ethics and epistemology, active during the time of Pericles.
Theocracy
A form of government in which a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler, and religious leaders govern in the name of that deity.
Monotheism
The belief in a single, all-powerful God.
Oligarchy
A form of government in which power resides in a small elite segment of society.
Autocracy
A system of government in which one person possesses unlimited power.
Latifundia
Large agricultural estates in ancient Rome worked by slaves.
Ethnocentrism
The belief in the superiority of one’s own culture or ethnic group.
Socratic Method
A form of cooperative argumentative dialogue that stimulates critical thinking, developed by Socrates.
