Figurative Language

saying something other than what is literally meant for effect

simile

a comparison using "like" or "as"

metaphor

a comparison that does not use "like" or "as"

personification

giving human characteristics to an animal or object

idiom

saying or expression that is not to be taken literally. “It’s raining cats and dogs”

hyperbole

an extreme exaggeration that is so dramatic no one would believe it's true.

alliteration

repetition of the same initial sound, or group of sounds in a series of words. "Sally sells seashells by the seashore"

onomatopoeia

use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound made by an object or an action. "snap, crack, pop!"
