What is culture?
Culture consists of a group's shared beliefs, values, customs, and behaviors.
What is socialization?
The process of learning the rules, norms, and behaviors of one's own culture.
What is acculturation?
Adapting to or learning a different culture.
What is cultural competence?
The ability to understand, communicate with, and interact effectively across cultures.
What is cultural humility?
Ongoing self-reflection, openness, and awareness of one’s own biases when working with other cultures.
What is a dialect?
A rule-governed variation of a language that is understood by all speakers of that language.
What are examples of dialects?
African American English, Southern English.
What is bilingualism?
The ability to speak and understand two languages.
What is elective bilingualism?
Choice to study a second language.
What is circumstantial bilingualism?
Must learn a second language to function in a new environment.
What is simultaneous bilingualism?
Learns two languages from birth.
What is sequential bilingualism?
Learns one language first, then a second later.
What does BICS stand for and what does it refer to?
Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills; social, everyday language (develops in about 1–3 years).
What does CALP stand for and what does it refer to?
Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency; academic language (develops in about 5–7 years).

The ability to switch between languages or dialects depending on the situation, context, or listener.
