war between the US and Spain. US wanted to help Cuba gain independence from Spain. Spanish lost control of places like Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Philippines

a group of countries that would resolve disputes to keep peace. US didn't join bc Pres Wilson didn't want their help

4 laws passed that made it illegal for American gov to favor/join any side

series of agreements, treaties, institutions, that created set of international rules & expectations to try to push countries away from conflicts and find peaceful resolutions
World Bank
provided loans that would help countries recover from the war and develop their economies.
United Nations
America did most to create this to keep peace and was a lot stronger than League of Nations. organization where anyone can join and countries would come together and work out their differences

North Atlantic Treaty Organization. main military alliance. protect against attacks from Soviet Union
The Berlin Airlift
soviet union divided Germany and its capital, Berlin, into 4 occupational zones. Soviet Union believed that it would force the Allies to give up either Berlin or their plans for the west German state. US and its allies supplied city by air
The Truman Doctrine
a policy Truman made to help countries fight against communism by giving them money and military support. was established bc Britain informed US that they could no longer afford to assist Turkey or Greece
Korean War
deep tensions between North and South Korea bc North Korea was pro-communist and South Korea was anti-communist
Pax Americana
American Peace. after WW2 there weren't any more wars about territory. US thinks this system will keep us safe (through working with alliances)
First Indochina War
a war in Vietnam between France and Vietnam. Viet wanted independence from France, France left Vietnam and Vietnam was split into North and South
The Geneva Accords
an agreement that ended the First Indochina War (and split vietnam)
Domino Theory
the idea that if one country falls into communism, nearby countries will follow one by one (influenced US's actions to South Viet)
Viet Cong
communist forces operating in South Vietnam. fought in guerilla style (supported by north viet)
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
an incident where NVA patrol boats retaliated and fired machine guns and torpedoes at a US destroyer in Gulf of Tonkin
USS Maddox
a US navy ship in the Gulf of Tonkin. led to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. reported being attacked by North Viet boats
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
it allowed pres to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of US and to prevent further aggression (gave queue to attack north viet)
The Tet Offensive
a major surprise attack by North Viet. shocked many bc no one expected it and made everyone realized the war was far from over. was during Tet, a holiday, a time when fighting was expected to pause.
