Describe the purpose of a state board of pharmacy

To protect the public health, safety, and welfare

• NOT to protect the profession of pharmacy

Describe the functions of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)

1. Oversee NAPLEX and MPJE

2. Develop professional policy and standards

3. Develop model legislation and regulations

4. Supervise license transfer between states

5. Facilitate communication between states regarding pharmacist disciplinary actions

Explain the location of the PEB within Wisconsin’s government

PEB (Ch. 450) is located within DSPS (Ch. 440). Both the DSPS and PEB were created by WI Chapter 15 (Structure of the executive branch)

Explain how an individual may join the PEB (including restrictions on who may be a member)

1. Must be a resident of the state

2. Nominated by the governor, approved by the senate

3. No more than 2 consecutive terms

   1. If there has been a break between terms, it’s ok!

4. May not be employed by a private org that promotes the profession regulated by that board

   1. ACCP, ASHP, PSW

   2. You can be a MEMBER of the orgs but not EMPLOYED by them

5. Public members (and their spouses) cannot be engaged in the profession regulated by that board

   1. We don’t want them to be influenced by the profession

6. Public members cannot be engaged in the delivery of physical or mental health care
