Connective Tissue Disease
Umbrella term for diseases affecting connective tissues (body fat, bones, cartilage, fascia, ligaments, skin, tendons)
Autoimmune diseases, Genetic disorders, Cancers (sarcomas)
Connective Tissue Diseases - 3 Main Categories
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Joint inflammation leading to joint destruction and deformity, may spread to blood vessels or organs
Lupus
Inflammation in any connective tissues (skin, joints, heart, lungs, kidneys)
Scleroderma
Body overproduces collagen causing thickening/hardening of skin and organs
Marfan Syndrome
Affects ELASTIN fibers making tissues too loose, causes elongated limbs and cardiovascular issues
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Weakens COLLAGEN making skin and joints hyperextendable, fragile, unstable
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Lack of type 1 collagen making bones, teeth brittle and joints loose
Sarcoma
Cancer that starts in connective tissues (bones, cartilage, fat, muscles, ligaments, tendons, deep skin layers)
Osteosarcoma
Most common primary bone cancer
