What did the gvmt initially let NAs do?
Allowed the NAs the right to determine what happened to their lands, but this ended in 1871, the gvmt began to destroy their rights up until 1930
What did the US gvmt follow?
A consistent policy of attempting to assimilate NAs into the US nation. Gvmt saw them as a problem
What did the trial structure mean?
They had some self determination and their trial laws meant there were not subject to the full law of the country
How did the nomadic lifestyle contrast?
nomadic, trial and communal life’s of the NAs meant they were not subject to the full law of the country. Nomadic lifestyle of following buffalo herds contrasted with the permanent settlements that new settler colonists established
Why did many see NAs as savages?
differences in religious practices and use of hallucinatory drugs during tribal ceremonies, and they had to be ‘americanised’. This meant converting them to Christianity and providing them with permanent land which they could farm
