What are some effects of long-term obesity?
Increased hospital length of stay, increased overall healthcare costs, decreased life expectancy, and higher risk for comorbidities
What comorbidities are associated with long-term obesity?
Diabetes type II, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, cancer, and renal disease
What hormone produced by fat cells, plays a major role in body weight?
Leptin
What are the two roles of Leptin?
Satiety and regulating energy expenditure or balance
What hormone signals the hypothalamus to regulate appetite?

Screening for diabetes, dyslipidemia, thyroid dysfunction, and fatty liver disease
What are some initial lab tests for obesity?

What are some medications used in weight-loss therapy?

Pulmonary embolism, infection, and anastomosis leak

Band slippage, obstruction, hernia, esophageal erosion, ulcers, acid reflux, vitamin deficiency, osteoporosis, anemia, and dumping syndrome
What is dumping syndrome?
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, lightheadedness, dizziness, bloating, belching, fatigue, heart palpitations, rapid heart rate
What are some nursing diagnoses related to bariatric surgery?
Deficient fluid volume, imbalanced nutrition, impaired physical mobility, acute pain, disturbed body image, anxiety, and depression
