Manorialism

an economic and legal system of the Middle Ages establishing power in a lord of the manor in relationship with peasants.

manor

The Lord's estate, including the land rented to tenants

Lord

Owned the land, collected payments, held court, defended the manor

Seneschal

the steward of a medieval great house. Responsible for all the manors of any one lord, visited regularly, loyal

Bailiff

the agent or steward of a landlord. Superintendent of the serfs and agriculture.

Serf

a person who is bound to the land and owned by the feudal lord
NOT freemen- worked the lords fields and own plot, paid for services (baking bread), had to have lord's permission to marry or for daughter to marry. Always poor, constant work, could not advance, oppressed, poor living conditions
