Purpose of the forebrain

directs all higher level cognitive and emotional function

Purpose of the hippocampus

turns short term memory into long term memory

Purpose of the amygdala

processes emotions, distinguishes between items

Purpose of the hypothalamus

monitors blood pressure, blood sugar, salt, and hormones

Purpose of the thalamus

relays and interprets information, mediates behavior, emotions, and memory, regulates body temperature, blood pressure, and blood sugar

Purpose of the corpus callosum

holds together the left and right hemispheres of the brain and communicates between the two

Purpose of the frontal lobe

linked to thought, memory, and behavior

Purpose of the parietal lobe

language comprehension, touch and senses, spatial relationship
