There are five main functions a community serves to meet psychological, practical, and economic needs.
Socialization
The function of a community where children learn the norms, values, and traditions through modeling and formal education.

Preventive Service
Services that seek to lessen strains of everyday life, such as vaccinations.
Supportive Service
Services aimed at maintaining the health, education, and welfare of the community, such as home health aide services.
Rehabilitative Service
Services that restore individuals’ ability to participate in the community, such as physical therapy.
Population Density
Measurement of the number of people in an area relative to its size.
Homogeneous Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods made up of people with similar backgrounds.
Heterogeneous Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods characterized by diversity within a particular group.
Cultural Transmission
The process through which communities pass down traditions, customs, language, and moral values.
Role of Community in Socialization
Communities shape socialization by providing an environment for learning norms, values, behaviors, and social skills.
