Aim of the Stanford Prison Experiment
To investigate how individuals conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a simulated prison.
Sample used in the study
24 emotionally stable male volunteers randomly assigned to guard or prisoner roles.
Setup of the prison simulation
In Stanford's basement, guards wore uniforms and had authority; prisoners were arrested, dehumanised, and controlled.
Main findings of the study
Guards became aggressive and abusive; prisoners became passive and distressed; study ended after 6 days.
Psychological concepts demonstrated by the study
Situational factors influence behaviour strongly, leading to deindividuation and loss of personal identity.
