Approval Voting

Approval voting allows voters to vote to either approve or disapprove of as many candidates are on the ballot. Votes, or approvals are then tallied and the candidate with the most approval wins.

Pros:

  • Allows you to support all the candidates you like.

  • Simple for new people and hard to mess up

  • Easy to be honest / reprisentative

  • Compatible with current election codes

  • works for multiple winner elections

Cons:

  • Approval is not the same as support

  • Possible to approve of two candidates, but like them very different amounts

  • Easier for fraud to fill in a bubble

Score Voting or Range Voting

In score voting, voters rate candidates from 1 - 5 or 1 - 10. You can give multiple candidates the same score, or leave a candidate off your ballot if you don’t have an opinion. The candidate with the highest average score wins.

Pros:

  • Vote carries a lot of information. Not only approval, but preference

  • Very representative

Cons:

  • Can’t be applied to head to head matchups

  • Easy to find your favorite and least favorite candidates, but hard to know where others place

  • Relies on heavy turn out. Too few people would skew towards whoever has the strongest feelings about certain candidates
