Burial Casket
A casket is a box in which the body of a dead person is buried
Cremation Casket
The casket can be made from any combustible material, hardwood, cloth covered wood, wicker, teak, bamboo, etc, no metal parts
Rental (Ceremonial) Casket
A casket appears from the outside very like a standard casket. The difference is the casket is structured so that an inner cremation container is held as an 'insert' within the casket; can be easily slid out after the visitation or ceremony for the deceased to be cremated
Green, Natural, Environmentally Friendly Casket
A biodegradable coffin or shroud and interred without a concrete burial The grave site is allowed to return to nature The goal is complete decomposition of the body and its natural return to the soil
Solid Wood
Is more expensive because of the personal craftsmanship and labor required during construction; Hardwood and Softwood
Engineered Wood
Are less expensive and often constructed in an automated manufacturing process; Laminations, Wood Veneer, Artificial Laminate, Plywood, Composition Board, Corrugated Containers
Hardwood
Angiosperms; Deciduous meaning they lose their leaves and foliage every and are generally dormant during the winter. They include many broadleaf trees, such as maple, birch, oak, cherry, mahogany, pecan, walnut and poplar
Softwoods
Gymnosperms; Coniferous (cone-bearing) trees and shrubs often with needles; They are primarily evergreen such as pine, spruce, and cedar
Laminations
A technique to manufacture a material in multiple layers so the composite material achieves improved strength stability sound insulation appearance or other properties from the use of differing materials
Wood Veneer
Created by gluing thin layer of wood of superior value or excellent grain to an inferior wood
Artificial Laminate
Created by gluing a thin layer of man-made material to an inferior wood or other material
Plywood
Thin sheets of wood glued together with grains at right angles to one another. Odd number of sheets so grain on front and back runs same direction
Composition Board
Particles of wood bonded together with waterproof glue (pressed board, particle board, flake board)
Corrugated Containers
Containers have an interior corrugated sheet shaped into alternate ridges ad grooves, with flat linerboards on the exterior surfaces. They may be used as shipping container and sturdy receptacles for the cremation of human remains, Natural brown color comes from unbleached wood fibers used in the manufacturing process
Ferrous Metals
Metals containing iron; Steel and Stainless Steel
Steel
Created by adding carbon to iron; 16,18,20 guage
Stainless Steel
Created by adding chromium to iron; 300 - 18%; 400 - 12%
Non-Ferrous Metals
More expensive; Bronze, Copper; Gold, Silver, Platinum;
32o - 19g ; 48o - 16g
Wrought Copper
Processed by rolling and hammering and forging it into specific shapes
Copper Deposit
A casket made from a core of copper metal to which copper ions are combined by an electrolytic process
Polymer
Is similar in appearance to plastic, A compound with a high molecular weight creating an extremely durable substance
Plastic
Is a synthetic or natural organic material softened + shaped and then hardened. Plastics are commonly used in hardware and seldom used as casket shells
Fiberglass
Consists of fine filaments of glass embedded in various resins. Caskets are lightweight, strong and can be given a variety of finishes
