All about Delta S univ, surroundings, and the system
What does the entropy of the universe equal?
the sum of the delta system and surroundings
How does an EXOthermic process affect the entropy of surroundings?
it increases
How does an ENDOthermic process affect the entropy of surroundings?
it decreases
What does spontaneous mean?
you DON’T need energy to make the reaction happen
What does non-spontaneous mean?
you DO need energy to make the reaction happen
The higher the temperature
the smaller the impact
When delta S univ is +
the reaction is spontaneous
When delta S univ is -
the reaction is non- spontaneous
When delta S is positive (system)
this means the entropy increases, but does NOT mean a reaction is spontaneous! (this is where Gibbs free energy comes in)
Equation to find delta S surroundings when K/atm is constant:
delta S surr = - delta H system/temperature
