What past experiences inspired the framers to create three branches? What did they hope to accomplish by creating a system of Checks and Balances?
The framers were inspired to create a three-branch system of government largely by their experiences with British colonial rule and the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation. They sought to prevent the concentration of power that characterized the monarchy and Parliament, as well as the weakness and inefficiency of the prior central government. By establishing a system of checks and balances, they hoped to ensure that no single branch could become too powerful, thus safeguarding individual liberties and promoting stable governance. |
